Praise Wedding: Share with us your journey as a wedding photographer!
Ben Yew: It all started as a hobby when my wife introduced me to photography. It was such an exciting journey for me. I didn’t actually plan to be a wedding photographer, I guess it was a gradual process.
Capturing the first wedding made me realize how awesome it was to capture such a memorable day. One wedding lead to another, then finally the time came for me to venture full time into this wedding photography industry.
I have since experienced so many different cultures, travelled to different countries and have met so many amazing people including budding photographers along the way. I am so thankful that I am doing what I love most and it doesn’t even feel like work. I am most interested in capturing outdoor weddings, especially outdoor destination weddings around the world. My Jerry Maguire version of his quote is “Photography completes me” !
Praise Wedding: How would you describe your unique style?
Ben Yew: I capture the Finest Moment with light and emotions. It is when everything amazingly romantic falls into place with the dreamy natural lights illuminating your perfect moment and everything else fades away.
Praise Wedding: Share with us 3 of your favourite shots, and tell us the story behind them!
Ben Yew: This photo above was captured in York, Western Australia. Such an amazing small town in an amazing place called Laurelville. I shot this through the window, with the blue sky reflecting on the window. There were so much chemistry between them and I wanted to portray it like a painting with the nice pastel colours and of course the finest moment.
Ben Yew: I love having fun during bridal sessions and I wanted the couple to feel comfortable and have fun on their wedding day. Candid moments like this photo above would make you feel like nothing else matters and it’s just them!
Ben Yew: I love this shot above because it’s like a fairy tale! The bride is looking for her groom, its like they are playing hide and seek with the amazing soft light illuminating her. I love images and movements filled with soft light. It just feels like a fairy tale scene to me!
Praise Wedding: How do you help clients discover their best looks and expression in front of the camera?
Ben Yew: I believe that in order to look your best, you must first be comfortable in front of the camera, trust your photographer, and have lots of fun! That is what I would prepare the couple for every wedding. I would first find the right position for light, check their posture, then have a conversation with them to help them relax, and probably share a few jokes as well!
Praise Wedding: Do you shoot destination weddings or overseas preweddings? Share your most memorable story with us! What would be your dream destination wedding?
Ben Yew: Yes, most definitely! I love travelling, and having amazing landscape for a wedding is totally a dream-come-true!
My most memorable destination wedding was from my most recent wedding in the U.S. Besides the stunning venue in Nestldown, the bride and groom was so crazy in love with each other!
I still remember their first look; this amazing couple showed so much love for each other. They were a dream couple to capture! It’s still giving me goosebumps just thinking about them now! Not only was there so much chemistry between them, their dance was also spectacular! And when I mention dance, it was the bride’s Michael Jackson dance!
My dream destination wedding would be any outdoor destination wedding country or state that I have never travelled to before. Somewhere remote with lots of space!
Praise Wedding: What do your clients love the most about working with you? How do you know you’ve done a great job for your wedding clients?
Ben Yew: I would say, most clients like the way I make them feel comfortable in front of the camera (maybe sometimes my lame jokes helped too)! I love to make clients laugh and get them in the zone during bridal sessions.
I normally know that I have done a great job at the end of the wedding when the couple shared with me what they enjoyed most about working with me, and after the wedding when they have received their images. When I see happy tears in their eyes upon receiving the images, it makes me love my job even more! Every wedding I capture is also a sweet memory for me, I remember each and every wedding like it was my own!
Praise Wedding: What really gets to you at weddings? Makes you emotional? Makes you laugh?
Ben Yew: Emotions!! When the father sees her daughter, the first time fully dressed in her gown, walking down the aisle with her. And the speeches, oh the speeches! Some speeches can be so emotional that they melt my heart! It can be the couple sharing their stories about how much their parents love them. These are the parts I love the most about weddings, they remind me about how much I love my family too!
What makes me laugh? Normally speeches too! Yes, best man or maid of honour speeches, hilariously memorable!
Praise Wedding: What has been your most interesting or dangerous assignment?
Ben Yew: Touch wood I haven’t captured any dangerously planned assignment, but I did trip over a ladder during a bridal session at the beach. It was actually more towards rolling over a ladder which I didn’t know existed. I was running backwards capturing a running shot of the couple. It was crazy, I bumped into the ladder from behind, fell and rolled over the ladder, landing on my head and neck first. Luckily it was at the beach and the sand cushioned my fall, and my camera was buried under the sand. The entire bridal party was shocked, and I am glad to be alive!
Praise Wedding: Who has influenced your photography? How do you keep yourself inspired?
Ben Yew: I would say my wife. She introduced me to photography and I always ask for her opinion on how I could do better each time. She is brutally honest and that is what I like about her. I am inspired by other photographers from fashion, commercial, travel and documentary. I don’t really have one particular photographer that inspires me, but it’s a combination of all of them.
Praise Wedding: Do you see any emerging trends in the wedding photography industry?
Ben Yew: I am seeing more and more aerial or drone shots for weddings in both photos and videos. It looks pretty cool but I am not really into that for now, because I feel that my style is more towards communicating with the couple. Perhaps in the future where it’s more automated and I do not need to control much on the the drone. I can see one company is launching this drone soon and its going to be a hit for wedding photographers and videographers especially!
