One of the best things about weddings is the mixture of emotions and feelings. It’s like the whole process of a relationship compressed into an one-day event. Laughter, tears, joy, and countless emotional moments are all happening in the same day, and they are all happening because of love. Photographs tell a thousand stories, but it takes the most sincere heart and the sharpest eyes to capture the true emotions in these stories.
When we look at photos taken by Melia and Jules from Vancouver based photography studio – Lucida, the powerful emotional compression is found. Their photos not only illustrate stories, but also convey the true emotions behind these critical moments of love. From their great varieties of work we can tell that these photographers are not only fun and creative, but also pour out their sincere hearts and full attention on every couple they encounter. The love and emotions expressed through Lucida’s photos are totally infectious. Today we want to share with you our interview with Melia & Jules (M&J), and of course, many of their wonderful work of love. Enjoy!
Praise: Tell us about you and your studio. Why did you choose to specialize in wedding photography? What sparked your interest in photography?
M&J: We are a wife and husband team who began photographing weddings in 2001 just a couple months after our own wedding. We chose wedding photography because we enjoy the emotional charge of the day, the variation in photographic challenges (portrait, documentary candid, detail, natural light, flash, ambient), and because we love getting to know the many interesting couples who hire us. Our interest in photography began in school– Melia did a BFA at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design.
Praise: How would you describe your style? Who or what inspires you in your personal life and work?
M&J: Our style is soft, light, natural and romantic. I am constantly pouring over images – photographed, painted, or printed. Pinterest has been a real pleasure over the last year where I can categorize my inspiration.
Praise: Where would be your favourite place to shoot a wedding?
M&J: A village in India.
Praise: How do you keep yourself motivated and your photography fresh?
M&J: I suffer from impostor syndrome in every aspect of my life so motivation is never a problem. I want to be authentically ‘good’! Keeping it fresh? I’m a scouter and a planner. I ‘plan’ to make some good photos and then work with conditions on the day.
Praise: What do you enjoy most about your job?
M&J: Moments of joy during the wedding day and then seeing my finished photos set to music and flowing in the slideshow or unwrapping a finished album.
Praise: What type of cameras/equipments do you shoot with?
M&J: All the Canon 5Ds and a bunch of prime lenses. A lot of them.
