For her most recent SS 2019 Collection, Emirati designer Hamda Al Fahim released a series of colorful, statement-making gowns inspired by the sky. Exquisitely feminine and as ethereal as can be, the new collection is equal parts whimsy and elegance, with each dress presenting an individual, autonomous character, each with her own striking silhouette.
Design Inspiration
Hamda Al Fahim: The SS19 Collection conveys a more personal anecdote and this is how it began: Being younger, I always disliked the sunset because it meant that it was the end of my day. Ever since then, every time the sun faded, it would ignite a feeling of desolation. I would do anything to avoid watching what seemed to spark this uninvited feeling of a heavy heart. This feeling stuck with me until my most recent trip to Italy where I finally allowed myself to face what had once felt overhyped.
I immersed myself in the experience and it was a moment of true revelation. I couldn’t believe that I had underpinned a feeling with me that allowed me to wholly overlook such a wonderful part of nature. It was a new-found love. I think it’s truly beautiful that a letdown could become a hopeful determination.
When I saw the view, I couldn’t help but dream. My eyes were stuffed with awe as I lost myself to the pleasant rhythmic colors of the sky. It was effortless, warm and sweet. I wanted this collection to portray the entire phenomenon of the sky in all its transitions. In this collection, you can see the unexpected color fusions and gradients, the ethereal patterns and illusive beauty of a glittered night.
Hamda Al Fahim: I wanted to do the sky justice in all its forms. I interpreted the auroras borealis but I also didn’t forget about the less appreciated cloudy blue skies and the beauty of the sunset in its warm oranges, peaches and vibrant purples all the way to the soft blues to mimic the joy of the first days of spring.
The Designer
UAE-based designer Hamda’s journey into the world of fashion wear is a journey of following one’s instinct, in answering one’s true calling in life.
Born to Emirati parents in 1985 in the UAE, she grew up in the capital city of Abu Dhabi. She graduated from the College of Art and Science and embarked on her career as an interior designer. But her heart was marching to its own beat from a very young age.
Her sartorial talent expressed itself in her childhood, sketching innovative dress designs and bringing them to life herself at the young age of 12. Being a resourceful and creative individual, she used whatever material was at her disposal to create her early collections. What started as a hobby was to become her profession soon.
Over the years, she has evolved into a fashion designer specializing in glamorous evening wear. The designs are inspired by an aesthetic fusion of eastern and western influences which make her signature style.
