Love at first “Call”?
Hendrick and Susan met accidentally over the phone! Susan worked as a pharmacist and Hendrick worked as a doctor in the same hospital.
One fateful afternoon, Susan was waiting for one of her fellow pharmacist to ring her back on the phone. The phone rang and after Susan picked up the phone and the other person replied “hello”, Susan thought she was talking to the pharmacist, and started rambling on about some medication. After 5 minutes of rambling on, the person on the other end said he had no idea what she was on about but decided to listen all the way through because he thought it was quite interesting. That person introduced himself as “Hendrick Tan”, and then they both laughed their heads off on the phone.
Hendrick was actually doing a favor for one of his colleagues at the time and needed to amend a script and hence rang the pharmacy. He asked Susan if he could come to the pharmacy, Susan gave him directions to the pharmacy, where they met for the very first time and the rest is history.
A romantic proposal
It happened on a random day, Hendrick had told Susan that they were going out with some friends to celebrate end of exams and that they were going for drinks after dinner. He told her he would pick her up at 6. When Susan opened her front door to greet Hendrick, he was nowhere to be seen, instead there was a white limousine in her driveway. The driver asked Susan to step inside the limo. After much shock and hesitance, Susan finally got inside the limo to find that there was no one in the limo, only the cards and presents that Hendrick organized. The aim of the game was to open the presents as Susan answers the questions about Hendrick correctly.
The limo took Susan to the park and restaurant where the couple had their first date. Hendrick was waiting at the park with Susan’s favorite flowers and took her to an area in the park where he had decorated with candles and pompoms hanging off the tree.
Hendrick then took out the ring, got down on bended knee and proposed. Susan cried and Hendrick pointed out that one of his friends had been hiding behind a tree with long lens taking pictures the whole entire time!
They finished off the night with dinner at the restaurant where they had their first date, and even sat in the exact same seats!
Inspiration behind the shoot
Samuel Goh Photography : Susan loves the jacaranda trees which only bloom for one month in November. Her favorite color is the purple shade of these trees. So they wanted to do the shoot in a place full of jacaranda trees – Hyde Park in Perth to reflect who they are as a couple. To enhance the romantic and happy atmosphere, they also incorporated colorful balloons.
From the couple (Hendrick and Susan): Sharing natural laughter and emotions and knowing that all of it would be captured on camera by our talented photographer to be relived every time was an amazing feeling!
Thoughts from the photographer
Samuel Goh Photography: We photographed this engagement session in the early summer in Australia, Perth, among the Jacaranda trees that Susan so dearly loved. I believe that the love and emotions they shared with me formed the core of the story, whilst the beautiful sunset and warm summer weather came together to make it wholesome!
As I’ve realized, my sense of gratitude comes not only in the form of photographs, but when I can play a small part in creating beautiful moments between two people in love. Whenever my couples walk away from the session holding hands, or look into each others’ eyes more dearly, it does make my heart smile and what I do a little more worthwhile.
